Long term weather forecast Winter 2011 - 2012
According to an article in last year's Telegraph (October 3rd 2010) we were in for another harsh winter
"Britain is in for another bitterly-cold winter, with widespread snow and Siberian temperatures, according to a forecaster who claims to have accurately predicted last year's big freeze."
How right they were! The winter came early, hit hard and stayed!
Long term weather forcast pundits this year are predicting another harsh winter, with some even suggesting it might be the worst so far. Global cooling rather than global warming seems to be to blame according to UK Weather Geek - James Madden.

Throughout the UK there were at least 6 reported fatalities of people, young and old, who died as a direct result of slipping on ice.
How safe are you on ice covered ground?
Slips and falls on ice cause a range of major and minor injuries numbering in their thousands, and some fatalities, every time we have a harsh winter. Now you can protect yourself against risk of injury by wearing ice grips over your boots or shoes.
Lethal thaw freeze conditions
Snow falls, gets trodden down and melts slightly in the relative warmth of the afternoon, and the smooth layer of snow melt fills the pores in the snow layer and freezes overnight into conditions resembling an ice rink. This is the reality for most of us in the UK where pavements are nor cleared by the local councils.
Yaktrax Pro and Yaktrax Walker ice grips are considered to give the best grip and slip prevention protection on packed snow and ice, especially thaw-freeze slippery pavements.
The law on clearing icy pavements is an ass!
The local council clears the roads, but has no obligation to to clear the pavements, nor, apparently any legal obligation to do so. Householders who clear pavements outside their home on the other hand, can be sued for doing so it someone consequently slips on a patch of ice created by their clearance!
Wear your socks over your shoes!
Various suggestions from old carpet tied to your shoes to wearing old woolen socks over your boots have been tried with some degree of success. The sleeves of an old woolen sweater might also do the trick. However these fabric solutions soon become clogged with snow.
Better ways to stop slipping on ice
Ice safety overshoes, or ice grips, are the ideal way to protect yourself on icy ground and prevent slips and falls on icy areas. Ice grips range from grit based grips like the Sandy with it's double sided grit plates designed for thin ice; studs and spikes; and the innovative Yaktrax steel coil ice grips which give excellent all round traction.
For runners or those covering hard and rutted ground underneath the snow, heavy duty screw in Icespikes ™ snow cleats are the answer if you don't mind a semi-permanent solution for the duration of the harsh weather.
See the main Yaktrax Ice Grips page for more detailed information on how to fit Yaktrax Walker and Pro ice grips correctly.
